For most bike races and competitive events, you will need a race licence. To obtain a race licence, you must join British Cycling as a Member or Premium Member.
Both of these memberships come with a free provisional licence and full race licences are available as an optional extra during sign up. Full race licences are required for most road races, and to earn points in any national or regional rankings.

What is a provisional licence?
A provisional race licence comes free with both memberships and is enough to get you into most BMX, cyclo-cross, cycle speedway and MTB races. This table tells you what licence you need for what event, or to be sure, check with the event organiser beforehand. If you race on a provisional licence you will not be eligible for any points.
I’m already a member. How do I add a race licence?
Existing members can purchase a full race licence by emailing us at membership@britishcycling.org.uk. If you don’t pay by direct debit, call the team on 0161 274 2010. Lines are open Monday – Thursday 9am-5pm and Friday 9am-3:45pm.
When does my race licence expire?
Due to UCI regulations, all licences run from January to December each year. Licences are charged at half price after 1st July. To bring your membership and licence in line so that they expire on the same date, please contact our friendly membership team on 0161 2742010 or if paying by Direct Debit, please email membership@britishcycling.org.uk.
Can I buy a day licence?
Yes. Single day licences enable you to try racing without committing to the cost of a full race licence. See here for more information.
What do I need to race abroad?
It is a requirement of the UCI that members of British Cycling obtain a letter of authority to race abroad. To qualify for a letter of authority, you must be in possession of a current full race licence. Requests should be sent to membership@britishcycling.org.uk stating your membership number and the name(s) of the countries you will be racing in.
